Neurology - eyes Flashcards
What are the three anatomic parts an eye can be split into?
Sclera - exterior
Uvea - middle
Retina - inner
What is the sclera?
The connective tissue surrounding the eye. This with the cornea makes up the exterior
What is the uvea?
The middle lining of the eye. It is made up of the
Iris - divides eye into two chambers
Ciliary body - secretes aqueous humour (under cornea) and vitreous humour (main body 80%)
Choroid
What is the retina?
The inner lining made up of ten layers.
Includes the optic disk and the macula (fovea)
What is the transparent media of the eye?
Conjuctivia
Cornea
Humour
Lens
What is the conjunctiva?
Continuous with skin of the eyelids, made up of stratified squamous epithelium and goblet cells (mucus production)
What is the cornea?
It is avascular with a level of hydration from the aqueous humour
What is the humour?
Produced by the ciliary body.
Aqueous is found under the cornea, provides nutrients and pressure
Vitreous is a gel preventing retinal detachment
What is the lens?
No blood vessels and made up of a soft cortex
What is the non transparent media?
Sclera and Chorid - supportive material
What is the photosensitive layer?
Made up of rods and cones that contain rhopdopsin, that undergo a chemical change when light hits it
What are rods and cones?
Rods - low light and no colour
Cones - colour and fine detail
How does it work neurologically?
The cones/rods send sensory information through bipolar cells, linked by amacrine cells, and through to ganglion cells to CNI
