Alimentary - mastication Flashcards
What is mastication?
chewing of food
What is the jaw?
Consists of the ramus and the body, with a condylar process that articulates with temporal bone (betwene fibro-cartilage disc).
Has a coronoid process for muscle insertion.
What are jaw differences between a carnivore and a herbivore?
Herbivores have high articular process of mandible/temporal where as lower in carnivores
What is the temporomandibular joint?
Facilitates rotational movement and up/down.
What is the mandibular symphysis?
A fibrous joint between two halves of the jaw, found in dogs and ruminants.
This allows precise occlusion and independent movement of each bone. Allows for changes in food texture.
What innervates the muscles of mastication?
V3 branch of trigeminal nerve
What is the temporal muscle?
A closing muscle
On cranial lateral surface and inserts on coronoid.
Pulls dorsally and very large in canines
What is the masseter?
A closing muscle
On maxillar skull + zygomatic arch and inserts on caudal side of mandible.
Unilateral and bilateral and protrusion of jaw
Large in herbivores
What is the medial pterygoid muscle?
Jaw closing
On pterygopalatine region and inserts medial aspect of mandible.
What is lateral pterygoid muscle?
Jaw closing
Originates same as before
Closes/protrudes jaw for one sided contraction.
What is the digastricus?
Jaw opening
Originates on paracondylar process of occipital bone and inserts on mandible.
Has two bellies
