which part of brain (seizures context) presents with automatisms and lip smacking?
Temporal lobe
Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Presentation:
- Urinary incontinence, gait abnormality, dementia
- NB: remember is as ‘wet, wobbly, wacky’
- symptoms develop over a few months
- Mx: Ventriculoperitoneal shunting
Brown-Sequard syndrome Presentation:
-UNILATERAL
Ipsilateral UMN signs and Contralateral spinothalamic signs
ddx: subacute degeneration of spinal cord: presents BILATERALLY
Trigeminal Neuralgia Presentation:
- Presents with sharp, unilateral facial pain triggered by chewing/brushing/similar activities
1st line investigation for stroke:
CT Head (non-contrast); once haemorrhagic stroke has been ruled out= then can give 300mg aspirin.
- Secondary management= Clopidogrel
most common complication after meningitis?
Sensorineural hearing loss
Status epilepticus Mx:
- if not responding to benzodiazepines(a maximum of 2 doses can be given), can give IV Phenytoin, Keppra or sodium valproate
Bell’s Palsy(forehead and eyebrow raising IS affected) Mx:
- Within 72 hours of symptoms starting, start oral steroids, specifically Prednisolone.
Cluster Headache duration?
15 minutes to 2 hours
- patient presents with severe headache, needing to pace around in the room and wanting to bang head against wall and maybe vomit.
Mx: 100% oxygen, prophylaxis= verapamil
