What neurotransmitter causes Depression?
- Decreased serotonin levels and decreased noradrenaline too
Depression risk factors:
- Genetics
- Adverse childhood experiences
-female sex and older age
-previous episode of depression
Grief vs. Depression:
Grief:
- Irritability
-Deep sadness
- Difficulty practicing acceptance
- Seeing or hearing things related to the loss
Similarities:
-intense malaise
-sleep disruption
-loss of appetite
-weight loss
Depression:
-Guilt (UNRELATED to grief)
-Preoccupation with worthlessness
- Prolonged difficulties functioning
-Suicidal ideation
ICD 11: Depression
- Need to have 5 symptoms mostly every day lasting at least 2 weeks AND 1 symptom from affective cluster(depressed mood/less interest in pleasure/activities)
Symptom list includes:
Affective cluster=
-Depressed mood
- Reduced interest in pleasure/activities
Cognitive-behavioural cluster:
- reduced ability to concentrate
-believes low self-worth
-absence of hope about future
-recurrent thoughts of death/evidence of attempted suicide.
Neurovegetative cluster:
- very disrupted sleep
- change in appetite/significant change in weight
- Psychomotor agitation
- Reduced energy, fatigue/tiredness
