Nervous system lab Flashcards
The peripheral nervous system consist of the
cranial & spinal nerves, ganglia and sensory receptors.
cranial & spinal nerves, ganglia and sensory receptors. Communication between these structures carry the _____ signal to
the effector signal to the target gland or muscle.
The central nervous system consist of the
brain and spinal cord that interpret sensory information.
External brain structures
The cerebral hemispheres
Diencephalon
Brain stem
Cerebellum
The brain contains what hemispheres
Two hemispheres (L&R regions) that are separated by the longitudinal fissure
Two hemispheres (L&R regions) that are separated by
by the longitudinal fissure
The brain is covered by
gyri (ridges) that are separated from one another by fissures or sulci (depressed area)
The central sulcus divides
the frontal lobe from the parietal lobe,
the lateral sulcus separates the
temporal lobe from the parietal lobe,
the parieto-occipital sulcus separates
the parietal lobe from the occipital lobe.
The primary somatosensory cortex is located in the
parietal lobe just posterior to the central fissure.
Impulses traveling from the body’s sensory receptors are localized and interpreted in this area of the brain.
somatosensory cortex
Special sense organ interpretation areas – visual – are found in the
posterior part of occipital lobe
Auditory – is found in
borders lateral sulcus in the temporal lobe.
Olfactory area – is found
deep within the temporal lobe along its medial surface.
