Nervous System Flashcards

1
Q

functions of nervous system

A
  • Collect, analayze, encode and interpret the stim from both internal and external environments
  • coordinate most body function, motor, visceral, endocrine and mental

Q

3 divisions of the NS

A
  1. PNS
  2. CNS- brain + spinal cord, nuclei (white + grey matter)
  3. ENS (digestive system)

Q

2 Major cell types in the PNS

A

Neuronal cells- recieve and transmit impulses

Neuroglial cells- support and protect the neuron (shwan cells insulate)

Q

3 types of neuron structures

A
  1. bipolar- one axon one dendrite (eye)
  2. unipolar- one axon divided into two branches
  3. multipolar- one axon multiple dendrites (motor)

Astrocyte function

A
  • structural

- associated with nerves and vessels around neres, able to mudulate blood flow

Q

Oligodendrocytes function

A

Function in electrical insulation and in myelin production in the CNS
-sits on the nerve axons and wrap around to protect the nerve terminals

A

located in the PNS where they envelop axons with either myleination or non myleination

Q

Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy

A
  • Gradual onset of numbness + tingling in your feet or hands, which may spread into your legs and arms
  • burning pain
  • sharp, jabbing or electric like pain
  • extreme sensitivity to touch
  • lack of coordination
  • muscle weakness

Q

what is diabetic neuropathy

A
  • increaed blood glucose may cause narrowing of blood vessels supplying nerves. These damaged blood vessels might leakcompounds into the nerves that damage them or fail to provide nerve w enough ox
  • also may stim attack of coating around nerve

Q

connective tissue of nerves (3 layers)

A

-Endoneurium- thin layer of connective tissue associated w indv axons

Perineurium- sorounds groups of axons called fasicles

Epineurium- layer of dense connective tissue that sourounds and binds together many nerve fasicles
