Nervous System Flashcards
functions of nervous system
- Collect, analayze, encode and interpret the stim from both internal and external environments
- coordinate most body function, motor, visceral, endocrine and mental
3 divisions of the NS
- PNS
- CNS- brain + spinal cord, nuclei (white + grey matter)
- ENS (digestive system)
2 Major cell types in the PNS
Neuronal cells- recieve and transmit impulses
Neuroglial cells- support and protect the neuron (shwan cells insulate)
3 types of neuron structures
- bipolar- one axon one dendrite (eye)
- unipolar- one axon divided into two branches
- multipolar- one axon multiple dendrites (motor)
3 types of neuroglial cells
- astrocyte
- Oligodendrocyte
- microglia
Astrocyte function
- structural
- associated with nerves and vessels around neres, able to mudulate blood flow
Oligodendrocytes function
Function in electrical insulation and in myelin production in the CNS
-sits on the nerve axons and wrap around to protect the nerve terminals
Microglia
resident immune cells of the brain and PNS
Schwan cells function location
located in the PNS where they envelop axons with either myleination or non myleination
Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy
- Gradual onset of numbness + tingling in your feet or hands, which may spread into your legs and arms
- burning pain
- sharp, jabbing or electric like pain
- extreme sensitivity to touch
- lack of coordination
- muscle weakness
diabetic foot features
Feet will appear cold on temp scan but there is poor nervous function in them, will not feel certain things
Causes of diabetic foot
- Trauma or pressure in the nerve
- diabetes
- vit defitiencies
- alcoholism
- autoimmune diseases
what is diabetic neuropathy
- increaed blood glucose may cause narrowing of blood vessels supplying nerves. These damaged blood vessels might leakcompounds into the nerves that damage them or fail to provide nerve w enough ox
- also may stim attack of coating around nerve
connective tissue of nerves (3 layers)
-Endoneurium- thin layer of connective tissue associated w indv axons
Perineurium- sorounds groups of axons called fasicles
Epineurium- layer of dense connective tissue that sourounds and binds together many nerve fasicles
