Mod 2- Integument Flashcards
5 functions of Integument system
- protection
- regulation of body temp
- sensation
- exreation (from sweat glands)
- absorbtion of UV
What 5 things compose the integument system
- Skin
- sweat glands
- sebaceous glands
- hair
- nails
(16% weight of body)
What type of epithelium is the epidermis
stratified squamous keratinized epithelium
what type of epithelium is the dermis
dense, irregular collagenous connective tissue
What makes up the rete apparatus
Dermal ridges + epidermal ridges
Kerinocyctes, melanocyctes, merkel cell, langerhance cell are found in the..
cells in the epidermis
5 layers of epidermis from out to in
Stratum corneum- Dead kerotinocytes
Stratum Lucidum- only in thick skin
Stratum Granulosum- water barrier, first row of living cells
Stratum spinosum- Production of keratization (many desmasomes)
Statum basale- ‘stem’ cells from keratinocytes
What are keratinocytes
form the largest population of cells, start in the statum basale and move upwards
What are merkel cells
- mechanoreceptors
- high 2 point discrimination where there is a large amount of merkel cells
- Fingertips, lips, genetalia
What are langerhans cells and where are they found
- upper stratum spinosum
- part of immune system
- important participant in allergic response
What are meanocytes and where are they found
- in stratum basale
- produce melanin
Two layers of the dermis
Papillary- superficial
retiucilar- deeper
what type of collagen fibre is found in the dermis
type 1
What is the papillary layer composed of
type 3 collagen and elastic fibres
what is the reticular layer compsoed of
irregular dense connective tissue
