Cartilage + Bone Flashcards
Functions of cartilage
- supporting soft tissue
- providing a gliding surface at articulations
- Providing a model for the formation of bones
Chondrocalcinosis
Density similar to bone in radiograph
- cartilage is calcifying
Enchondroma
Cartilage based tumor
Chondrosarcoma
rising from a beign osteosarcoma and turning into an agresssive type of cartilage growth
3 types of cartillage
Hyaline cartilage
Elastic cartilage
fibrocartilage
Hyaline cartilage
-contains type 2 collagen
Elastic cartilage
- contains type 2 collagen
- more plyable
Fibrocartilage
- contains coarse, dense type 1 collagen fibres
- strong tensilely
Components of extra cellular matrix of cartilage (3)
- Agrrecans (large agrregation of proteins)
- Hylauronan - Non sufated GAGs
- Collagen
Chondrogenic cells
- can differentiate into both chondroblasts and osteoprogenitor cells
Chondroblasts
-derived from both mesenchymal cells and chondrogenic cells
Chondrocytes
Chondroblasts souronded by the matrix
where are type 1 fibres found
Bones, tendons, fibrocartilage, organ capsuls, dentin
Where are type 2 fibres found
Hyaline cartilage, elastic cartilage
Where are type 3 fibres found
Reticular fibres
