Mod 2- Oral Cavity Flashcards
4 functions of the oral cavity
- Sensory Analysis (of material before swallowing
- Mechanical processing (thru actions of teeth, tongue)
- Lubrication
- Limited digestion
what are the two areas that the oral cavity is broken up into
Vestibule- area outside of teeth
Oral cavity proper
what type of epithelium is the entire oral cavity line by
Stratified squamous epithelium
what is masticated and specialized epithelium in the oral cavity
masticated- form surfaces that are in contact with food (karatinzed stratified epithelium)
Specialized- found on dorm of tongue (ability to taste)
3 surfaces of the lip
external aspect
Vermilion zone- top aspect- no sweat glands/ hair
Mucous/ internal- wet and covered in squamous nonkeratinized epithelium
how do the intrinsic and extrinsic muscle move the tongue
extrinsic- responsible for moving tongue in and out
Intrinsic- alter shape of tongue
what are the two regions of the dorsal tongue and what separates them
Ant 2/3 and post 1/3 sepeated by sulcus terminals who’s apex points post and contains foamed cecum
what is present in the ant 2/3 post 1/3 of the tongue
post-lingual tonsils
ant- lingual papilae
what cranial nerve innverates ant and post part of tongue
ant- cranial nerve 7
post- cranial nerve 9
what are the 4 types of lingual papillae
- Filiform
- Fungiform
- foliate
- circumvallate
role of filiform papillae and what is it made of
- most numerous
- help scrape food and break it down
- stratinized keratinized epithelium
what type of papillae are taste buds
fungiform or foliate (in neonate)
what is the role of fungiform papillae/ where are they found
- resembles a mushroom with broad cap
- stratified squamous non keratinized
- have taste buds on the dorsal aspect of cap
where are foliate papillae located and what is its role
- located along the posterolateral aspect of tongue
- functional taste buds only in neonate
where are circumvallate papillae found
located in the space between the ant and post portions of the tongue
