What is the purpose of NATO?
The purpose of NATO is to defend the member states, through diplomatic means where possible but with military force when required.
Why was NATO originally formed?
To stop the Soviet advance through a weakened europe after WWII
What is article 5?
Article 5 says that an attack on one member country is an attack on them all.
When has article 5 been implemented?
After the twin towers attacks on 9/11
Why wasn’t article 5 implemented during the Falklands?
Because the treaty only covers lands above the Tropic of Cancer. Also because we have to ask for help and we probably didn’t want anyone else getting involved.
What is the partnership for peace program?
21 aspiring members who are interesting in joining the alliance. Mostly former soviet states.
