Why are people in Hong Kong protesting?
Initially do to with an extradition bill that would allow them to be extradited to mainland china. This bill was withdrawn in September but protests show know signs of stopping as the protesters believe there is a need for a bigger democratic reform.
How is Hong Kong governed?
Hong Kong forms it own laws and governs itself, other than it matters of foreign affairs or defence.
What do protesters want to happen?
Protesters are calling for direct elections to choose people with legislative powers and a more transparent democratic process. Some have even gone as far as to request total independence from mainland China which is very worrying for Beijing.
Accusations against mainland?
Puts pressure on the island to self-censor by doing things like arresting writers, journalists, and influential businessmen that have said or done things that they don’t like.
Police brutality and improper use of tear gas and rubber bullets on civilians. There have also been accusations of the government using hired thugs to attack key players who have been organising protests.
Key Dates
February 2019 – Extradition Bill Submitted
March 31st - Protests begin
May 30th - The bill is weakened but it is not enough
June 12th - Police fire rubber bullets and tear gass
June 15 – Lam indefinitely delays the proposed extradition law.
August 13 - Airport blocked by protestors
September 4th - Bill formally withdrawn.
