Current Affairs (Kashmir) Flashcards
Where is Kashmir?
On the border of China, India and Pakistan, with areas governed separately by all three countries.
Who owns what?
Kashmir
India - Jammu and Kashmir
Pakistan - Azad Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan
China - Aksai Chin and Trans Katoram Tract
What is the problem?
Kashmir
The problem is that there has been a lot of tension in the area ever since British India split in 1947. India is now ruled by a Hindu nationalist government and the area is predominantly Muslim.
What has stopped them getting rid of the Muslims previously?
Kashmir
Article 370 limits the amount of Hindu migrants to the area but this has been taken out of action by the Indian government.
Why are the Muslims in Kashmir worried?
New Dehli could encourage mass migration to push the Muslims out of the area. This fits the government agenda of creating a Hindu India where the religion is at the centre of government and policy.
How are relationships between Pakistan and India?
Pakistan who see themselves as protectors of the Muslim community in that area. After India cut off phone and internet connections, sent in thousands of additional troops, and put prominent Muslim leaders under house arrest, Pakistan have downgraded diplomatic relations and trade with India.
Why is the Kashmir situation worrying for the international community?
War has been fought in this area over less and it is extremely worrying due to both countries nuclear capabilities
Your opinion?
It’d be great if we could all be friends but some things are worth fighting for. I’m a strong believer in freedom of religion - im not sure how restrictive a Hindu India would be, it would be great to do what we can to protect these people freedoms. At the same time, it’s definitely not worth promoting war with two UN and Commonwealth members that we have pretty good relationships with.
