Narcan classification
Narcotic antagonist
Narcan action
- Binds to opiate receptor sites
- May precipitate withdrawal symptoms
- Reverse respiratory depression secondary to narcotic OD
Narcan onset and duration
- IV/IO/ET 1-2 min, IN 3-4 min, 2-5 min IM

Narcan indication
- Respiratory depression secondary to suspected narcotic ingestion
- Treatment of coma of unknown origin with apnea/hypoventilation or in neonatal resuscitation
Narcan contraindication
Hypersensitivity
Narcan precautions
- May precipitate withdrawal symptoms
2. Prepared to restrain violent patients
Narcan dosage and administration
Adult:
1. .4-2mg IV/IO/IN/IM/ET repeated every 2-3 min up to 10mg until pt begins to breath
2. If no response after 10mg consider different etiology of respiratory depression
Pediatric:
1. 0.1mg/kg IN/IV/IM/IO/ET up to 2mg until pt begins to breath. May repeat as needed not to exceed 10mg
Narcan adverse reaction
Withdrawal symptoms:
Sweating, tremor, N/V, agitation belligerence, hyper/hypoventilation
