A
Prevents conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin. Does not lyse existing clots.

A
Onset: immediate
Peak Effect: Variable
Duration: 4-8 hrs

A
AMI, pulmonary emboli, DVT

Heparin Contraindications
A
Bleeding tendencies, Recent cranial/spinal/eye surgery, severe hypertension, severe thrombocytopenia

Heparin Adverse Reactions
A
Hemoorrhage, bruising, pain

Heparin Dosage and Administration
A
Adult: IV bolus 60u/kg max 4,000u. Infusion @ 12u/kg/hr max 4,000u or 1,000u/hr
Ped: Not recommended
