A
Bronchodilator, beta-2 selective, sympathetic agonist

Albuterol action
A
- Relaxes bronchial and uterine smooth muscle by acting on beta adrenergic receptors
- Causes potassium influx into cell

Albuterol onset and duration
A
- 5-15 min
2. 3-6 hrs

Albuterol indications
A
- Wheezing, allergic reactions, asthma, COPD
- Suspected hyperkalemia
- Crush injury syndrome

A
Hypersensitivity

Albuterol cautions
A
- Patients with CVD
- Patients taking tricyclics
- The elderly generally require lower dose
- Monitor heart rate
- Listen to lungs before and after treatment
- beta blockers may blunt the effect

Albuterol dosage and administration
A
Adult: 2.5mg in 3ml NS SVN
Pediatric: blow by if < 5 yo
a. >6mo 2.5mg in NS SVN
b. <6mo 1.25mg in 3ml NS SVN

Albuterol administration
A
Instruct patient to:
- clear nasal passages and throat
- Breath and expel as much air as possible
- Place in mouth and inhale deeply

Albuterol adverse reactions
A
Tremor, nervousness, dizziness, headache, tachycardia, collocations, hypertension, nausea and vomiting, and ventricular arrhythmias

Albuterol referencing protocol
A
- Shock (anaphylaxis)
- Respiratory
- Medical (renal dialysis hyperkalemia)
- Environmental (toxic inhalations and allergic reaction)
- Traumatic injuries (crush injury)
