Muscles of the Hyoid Flashcards
Characteristics of the Hyoid muscles
Assist in the movement of the tongue and floor of mouth during mastication and swallowing
Groups: Suprahyoid, Infrahyoid
All attached in some way to the hyoid bone, except for the sternothyroid
Which muscles are innervated by the mylohyoid nerve?
Anterior belly of digastric muscle
Mylohyoid muscle
Which muscles are innervated by the posterior gastric nerve?
Posterior belly of digastric muscle
Which muscles are innervated by the stylohyoid nerve?
Stylohyoid muscle
Which muscle is innervated by the first cervical nerve?
Geniohyoid muscle
Which muscles are innervated by the third cervical nerves?
Omohyoid
Sternohyoid
Sternothyroid
Thyrohyoid
Action of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle
Forms midline of submental triangle
Elevates hyoid bone and larynx.
Depresses mandible and opens jaw
Origin and Insertion of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle
Origin: Intermediate tendon attaches to hyoid bone
Insertion: Midline, inner surface of mandible, lateral to genial tubercle
Action of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle
Forms submandibular triangle w/ mandible
Elevates hyoid bone and larynx
Origin and insertion of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle
origin: mastoid notch of temporal bone
Insertion: intermediate tendon
Action of the mylohyoid muscle
Forms the floor of the mouth
Elevates hyoid bone and larynx, depresses mandible, opens jaw and helps elevate the tongue
Origin and insertion of the mylohyoid
origin: mylohyoid line of mandible
insertion: body of the hyoid bone
Action of the stylohyoid muscle
Elevates hyoid bone and larynx
Origin and insertion of the stylohyoid
origin: styloid process of temporal bone
insertion: body of hyoid bone
Action of the geniohyoid muscle
Forms floor of mouth
Elevates hyoid bone and larynx. Depresses mandible and opens jaw. Helps elevate the tongue
