What are the hip flexors?
- Iliopsoas group
- Tensor Fascia Lata
- Rectus Femoris
- Sartorius
What are the hip extensors?
- Glute max
- Hamstrings (biceps femoris long head, semitendinosus, semimembranosus)
What are the lateral rotators of the hip?
- Piriformis
- Sup. Gemellus
- Obturator internus

- Quadratus femoris
- Obturator externus
- Glute max
What are the medial rotators of the hip?
- Tensor Fascia Lata
- Glute med
- Glute min
What are the fascial compartments of the thigh?
- ant: quadriceps femoris, sartorius
- post: hamstrings
- medial: adductors
Explain the Quadriceps femoris (anterior compartment of thigh).
Rectus femoris + Vastus lateralis + vastus intermedius + vastus medialis
- fuse into quadriceps tendon and insert of tibial tuberosity via patellar tendon/lig
- knee extension
Explain the sartorius m. of the ant. compartment of the thigh
- “Tailor’s muscle”
- hip flexion, abduction, lat. rotation
- knee flexion
- O: ASIS
Explain the hamstrings of the post. compartment of the the thigh
Biceps femoris heads + semitendinosus + semimembranosus
O: ischial tuberosity
- hip extension
- knee flexion
Explain the adductors of the medial compartment of the thigh.
Adductor magnus + longus + brevis + gracilis (I: tibia) + pectineus
What is the pes anserine group
- Gracilis
- Semimembranosus
-Semitendinosus
What are the fascial compartments of the (lower) leg?
- Ant.
- Lateral
- Post. (superficial +deep)
What’s the difference btwn shin splints and compartment syndrome?
Shin splints: continuous pain
Compartment syndrome: swelling of muscles in a compartment causing pain during exercise
What are the muscles of the anterior compartment of the lower leg?
- Tibialis ant.
- extensor digitorum longus
- extensor hallucis longus
- fibularis tertius
What are the muscles of the lateral compartment of the lower leg?
- fibularis longus
- fibularis brevis
What are the extensor retinaculums of the foot?
- sup. extensor retinaculum
- inf. extensor retinaculum
