Q

ATP synthesis in photosynthesis

A

light provides energy to form chemical bonds in ATP which are then broken to release energy needed to make bonds for glucose

Q

ATP synthesis in respiration

A

organic molecules broken down and energy released is synthesises ATP which is used to supply energy needed to break bonds in metabolic reactions of the cell

11
Q

explain the process of chemiosmosis

A

sun excites electrons
electrons go to electron carrier at high concentration creating electrochemical gradient as energy is used to actively pump hydrogen ions across the membrane
due to the high concentration some hydrogen ions diffuse back into membrane down concentration gradient through channel protein where ATP synthase is attached intracellularly and catalyses ADP+PI

16
Q

what is non-cyclic photophosphorylation

A

involves photosystem 11 and followed by photosystem 1

17
Q

outline the first stage of the light dependant stage of photosynthesis

A

PS11- absorbs light, excited electrons and produces ATP via chemiosmosis

18
Q

what is photolysis

A

the electrons from PS11 must be replenished by light splitting water into electrons, protons and oxygen
oxygen is waste so is released
electrons are used in electron transport chain
protons added to high con,. to contribute to chemiosmosis

19
Q

what happens at photosystem 1

A

light excites electrons ( absorbs more light)
electrons are then added to NADP and protons to make NADPH

20
Q

what is pigment

A

natural colouring matter of animal or plant tissue

21
Q

what is cyclic phosphorylation

A

electrons can leave the chain after PS1 and can be returned to PS1 instead of being used to form reduced NADP

22
Q

where does the light independent stage occur

23
Q

what is used in the light independent reaction

A

co2, ATP and recued NAD (products of light independent reaction)

24
Q

what is the first stage of the light independent reaction

A

rubisco adds CO2 ( 1 carbon) to ribose bisphosphate ( 5 carbon)

25
what is the second stage of the light independent reaction
the RUBP becomes unstable so splits into 2 glycerate- 3-phosphates ( 3 carbons)
26
what happens at the third stage of light independent reaction
reduction of ATP- ADP and NADPH- NADP to produce triose phosphate
27
what is the fourth stage of the light independent reaction
5 TP's are recycled, 1 is used make glucose
28
what is the fifth stage of light independent reaction
5 TP are regenerated to make RUBP - phosphate added from ATP-ADP+PI
29
What is a limiting factor
Factor in short supply and limits rate of photosynthesis
30
What are 3 limiting factors of photosynthesis
Light intensity Volume of co2 Temperature
31
How does low light intensity affect photosynthesis
Less energy to excite electrons so less ATP and reduced NADP being produced so less TP but more GP due to lack of products from light dependant
32
How does high light intensity affect photosynthesis
High amounts of ATP and reduced NADP being produced - decrease in GP- reduced quickly produce more glucose
33
What is the effect of low temperature on photosynthesis
Rubisco won’t work efficiently so glucose won’t be made as quick , less GP, TP,RUBP
34
What is the effect of high temperature on photosynthesis
Rubisco will denature , glucose cannot be formed
35
What is the effect of high co2 levels on photosynthesis
More products of light independent reaction made
36
What is the effect of low levels of co2 on photosynthesis
More RUBP- less GP and TP being produced
37
