Evaluation Group
To assess client’s skills, assets, and limitations during group interaction
Thematic Group
To assist multiple individuals in acquiring the knowledge, skills and/or attitudes needed to perform a specific activity. Group interaction is not important unless it interferes.
Topical Group
To discuss specific activities that members are engaged in outside of group to enable them to engage in the activities in a more effective, satisfying manner
Task-Oriented Group
To increase clients’ awareness of their needs, values, ideas, feelings, and behaviors as they engage in a group task/activity
Developmental Group
A continuum of groups focused on teaching and developing members’ group interaction skills
Parallel Group (developmental)
To enable members to perform individual tasks in the presence of others.
Project Group (developmental)
To develop the ability to perform a shared, short-term activity with another member in a comfortable, cooperative environment
Egocentric-Cooperative Group (developmental)
To enable members to select and implement a long-range activity which requires group interaction to complete
Cooperative Group (developmental)
To enable members to engage in a group activity which facilitates the free-expression of ideas and feelings in order to develop a sense of trust, love, belonging, and cohesion.
Mature Group (developmental)
To enable members to assume all functional socio-emotional and task roles within a group.
Instrumental Group
Concerned with meeting health needs and maintaining function.
