Aim?
to reproduce the Asch experiment without need for confederates
How many students?
104 Japanese
What were the students put into?
same-sex groups of 4
What did the participants have to do?
sit around a table with randomised seats and say aloud which of the three comparison lines matched a stimulus line
Why did participants wear sunglasses?
to prevent glare, with the third participant in each group wearing different glasses which made them see a shorter or larger comparison line
What was the questionnaire?
to see if participants were suspicious about any part of the research process
What did the majority influence answer?
incorrectly 8.2% of time
26 minority participants who saw different sized comparisons?
answered incorrectly 19.6% of time
Female and male?
female = incorrectly 28.6% male = incorrectly 5%
What did minority influence note?
their judgements were different but none reported suspicions concerning honesty so demand characteristics didnt occur
What did no-one do?
laugh at any wrong answers so this was not a reason for conformity
What does the procedure provide?
an effective means of examining conformity in natural settings
