morphemes
the smallest language units that carry meaning (can be a word/prefix)
productive language stage 1 (babbling stage)
around 4 months, infants spontaneuously make sounds (ma-ma, da-da)
productive lang stage 2 (one-word stage)
1-2, single words (fish/puppy)
productive lang stage 3 (2 word stage)
age 2, 2 word statements (want juice)
productive lang stage 3 (telegraphic speech)
child speaks like a telegram, mostly nouns/verbs (go car)
aphasia
impairment of language
- caused by either Brocas area (impairing speaking) or Wernickes area (impairing understanding)
brocas area -speaking
left frontal lobe, controls language expression/directs muscle movements involved w/speech
wernickes area -understanding
left temporal lobe, involved in language comprehension and expression
linguistic determinism
language controls the way we think and the world around us
- too extreme because we all have unsymbolized (wordless) thoughts
- made by Whorf
linguistic influence
idea that language AFFECTS thought (therefore our thinking/world view is “relative to” our cultural language)
- weaker version of linguistic determinism/relativity
