Module 32 Flashcards
episodic memory
EXPLICIT memory of personally experienced events, one of 2 conscious memory systems
semantic memory
EXPLICIT memory of facts/general knowledge, one of 2 conscious memory systems
hippocampus
a neural center in the limbic system, processes for storage explicit (conscious) memories
- like a save button for explicit memories
memory consolidation
when explicit memories go from the hippocampus to long-term memory
what parts of your brain are processing sites for explicit memories?
frontal lobes and hippocampus
what part of your brain are processing sites for implicit memories?
cerebellum and basal ganglia
what is the basal ganglias role in procedural (implicit) memory
it recieves info from the cortex but doesnt send it back
infantile amnesia?
experience of our conscious (explicit) memory of our first 4 years of life is largely blank.
- because the hippocampus isnt matured & the way we process explicit memories is complex
flashbulb memories
a clear memory of an emotionally significant event (ex whereabouts on 9/11 or your first kiss)
long-term potentiation (LTP)
an increase in a cells firing potential after brief, rapid stimulation + more connections between existing neurons
a neural basis for learning/memory
priming
the unconscious activation of certain associations, thus predisposing ones perception, memory, or response
encoding specificity principle
idea that cues/contexts specific to a particular memory will be most effective in helping us recall it
mood-congruent memory
the tendency to recall experiences that are consistent w/ones mood
serial position effect/phenomenon
our tendency to recall best the last (recency effect) and first (primacy effect) in a list
