Module 1, Objective 1, Airport Categories Flashcards

1
Q

An airport can be included in the NPIAS if

A

they are a commercial service airport with scheduled air service of at least 2500 annual enplanements

designated as a general aviation reliever airport

receives scheduled air carrier transport to where a freight forwarder, FBO, ect., is under contract with the US postal service

a unit of the Air National guard, or reserve component of the Armed Forces, operates aircraft and is either permanently based on, or located adjacent to the airport

1
Q

What is the NPIAS

A

it is a 5 year projection that is printed every two years

it identifies airports within the national airport system, the roles they currently serve, and the amounts and types of airport development eligible for federal funding under the AIP over the next 5 years

Q

You MAY be included in NPIAS if

A

you are part of a state airport system plan

service a community more than 30 min from the nearest NPIAS airport

forecasted to have 10 or more based aircraft within the next 5 years and considered by a public sponsor who is willing to undertake ownership and development

may be included through special justification

Q

What is an Enplanement?

A

a paying passenger boarding a commercial flight

Q

What is an “industrial aviation airport”

A

airports that are characterized by significant industrial operations such as aircraft assembly, fabrication, and manufacturing, and large MRO facilities

not an official classification, but recognized by AAAE

Q

What is a primary commercial service airport?

A

it has 10,000 or more enplanements a year

they receive a greater allocation of federal funding than non-primary

15
Q

Who uses Nonprimary Airports?

A

they are mainly used by GA aircraft

16
Q

What are the kinds of Nonprimary Airports?

A

included are nonprimary commercial service airports service between 2500 and 9999 enplaned passengers a year, general aviation airports, and GA reliver airports

17
Q

What is a Large Hub airport?

A

largest commercial service airport, serves at least 1% or more of total US enplanements

18
Q

What is a medium hub airport?

A

they enplane 0.25 to 1% of total US enplanments

19
Q

What is a small hub airport?

A

airports that enplane .05-.25% of total US enplanements

20
Q

What is a nonhub primary airport?

A

commercial service airports that total less than .05% of all commercial passenger enplanements, but not more than 10,000 annual enplanements

21
Q

What is a nonprimary hub airport?

A

It includes commercial service airports with scheduled passenger service between 2500 and 10,000 annual enplanements, general aviation reliever airports, and general aviation airports

22
Q

What is a General Aviation Airport?

A

the largest subcategory of airports. Can be owned publicly or privately. A public-use airport that does not have scheduled service or has fewer than 2,500 annual passenger enplanements

23
Q

What is a General Aviation Reliever airport?

A

designated by the FAA to to relieve congestion at a commercial service airport and to provide general aviation access tot he community.

It gives an alternate to using congested hub airport, its a high-capacity airport in a major metropolitan area

24
Q

What are benefits of GA airports

A

emergency preparedness and response, law-enforcement, firefighting, disaster relief and aeromedical flights, critical community access to remote populations, essential air and cargo service, air taxi service, commercial, industrial and economic activities such as agriculture, oil and mineral exploration survey, pipeline patrol, executive business travel, express cargo, and low orbit space launch and landing. Special events such as airshows, aviation open houses, skydiving, tourism, and intermodal connections

25
Q

What must you have to be eligible for a GA reliever designation?

A

you must be open to the public, have 100 or more based aircraft, or have 2,500+ annual itinerant operations

26
Q

What are the 5 categories that the GA Asset Report divides GA airports into?

A

GA National Airports, GA Regional Airports, GA Local Airports, GA Basic Airports, and Unclassified

27
Q

What does the Asset Report divide GA by?

A

activity measures such as the number of annual operations and the types of aircraft based at the airport

28
Q

GA National Airports?

A

near major business centers. support operations by the most sophisticated aircraft in GA, mostly jet aircraft to include cooperate and fractional ownership

heliports and seaplane bases are not included

29
Q

GA Regional Airports?

A

located in metropolitan areas and serve relatively large populations. support interstate and intrastate flying. Substantial amount of charter, jet flying, and rotorcraft, but no heliports

30
Q

GA Local Airports?

A

the backbone of the GA system with at least one in every state

typically located near larger population centers. mostly serving piston aircraft in support of business and person needs. Also accommodate flight training, emergency services, and charter passenger services

no heliports, but there are seaplane bases

31
Q

GA Basic Airports?

A

often have just one runway, helipad, or seaplane plane. They provide a means for GA flying and link the community to the national airport system. flying is self piloted mostly piston

32
Q

Unclassified?

A

most of these had been in the NPIAS but have seen a decline in aviation and no longer fit into a category
