Mod 7 Lesson 3 Flashcards
What is an anion?
The gain of one or more electrons resulting in a negatively charged atom.
How does atomic size change across a period and down a column on the periodic table?
Atomic size increases from right to left across a period and increases from top to bottom in a column.
What is the bonding atomic radius?
Half the distance between two bonding atoms’ nuclei; ½d.
What is a cation?
The loss of one or more electrons resulting in a positively charged atom.
What is effective nuclear charge?
The attractive force between an electron in a many-electron atom and its nucleus after taking into account electron screening.
What is an ion?
A neutral atom that has gained or lost electrons creating an electric charge.
How does ionic radius size change across a period and down a column on the periodic table?
Ionic radius size increases from right to left across a period and increases from top to bottom in a column; anions are larger than their neutral counterparts, and cations are smaller than their neutral counterparts.
What is the nonbonding radius?
The shortest length separating the nuclei of the two atoms during a collision.
What is a shell in atomic structure?
Also known as energy level; a location outside of the nucleus with very specific energies where electrons are located.
