Mod 7 Lesson 2 Flashcards
What is Coulomb’s law?
Coulomb’s law is used to calculate the magnitude of the electric charge between two atoms.
What is effective nuclear charge (Zeff)?
Effective nuclear charge (Zeff) is the attractive force between an electron in a many-electron atom and its nucleus, taking into account electron screening.
What is the screening constant (S)?
The screening constant (S) is a number calculated to help find the effective nuclear charge.
What are shells in atomic structure?
Shells refer to energy levels in an atom.
What does it mean to shield/screen an electron?
To shield/screen means that one electron is partially blocked or screened from feeling the pull from the nucleus due to the other electrons surrounding it.
