Mod 1 Lesson 5 Flashcards
coarse focus
always the larger of the two focus knobs on a microscope; moves the stage up and down; also called the coarse adjustment knob
condenser adjustment knob
controls the distance between the light condenser and the stage; do not adjust this knob unless directed
diaphragm
the part of the microscope located right under the stage where the light passes through; it opens and closes the iris to let more or less light through the slide (changes the brightness)
eyepiece
the part of the microscope allowing the user to look through it
field of view
the diameter of the total circular area a user sees when looking through the microscope
fine focus
always the smaller of the two focus knobs; changes the fine focus after the coarse adjustment has been initially set; also called the fine adjustment knob
magnification
the factor by which an image appears to be enlarged
mechanical stage controls
controls which allow the microscope user to move the slide while viewing when the slide is clipped in with the stage clips
ocular lens
found on the eyepiece of the microscope; one of the two lenses involved in magnifying; typically 10x
objective lens
a lens found on the revolving nosepiece of the microscope that can be rotated over the slide; if it is not snapped into place, the image will not be seen clearly
revolving nosepiece
the part of the microscope that holds three or more objective lenses and can be rotated to easily change power or total magnification
stage
the platform that the slide is placed on in a microscope
total magnification
eyepiece magnifying factor multiplied by the objective magnifying factor
