Mod 6 Lesson 6 Flashcards
What is condensed electron configuration?
A method of representing the electrons within an atom; the nearest noble gas’s electron configuration is represented by the noble gas’s symbol written within brackets followed by writing out the outermost electrons.
What is an electron dot drawing?
A method of representing the electrons within an atom; the valence electrons for an element are drawn around the symbol for the element.
What is expanded electron configuration?
A method of representing the electrons within an atom; all electrons within the atom are written out.
What is Hund’s rule?
For electrons within degenerate orbital shapes (p, d, and f orbitals), each orientation of that shape must be filled with one electron before the second electron can be filled.
What is a core electron?
All other electrons that are not considered valence electrons.
What is an orbital diagram?
A method of representing the electrons within an atom; each orbital is denoted by a box, and each electron is represented by an up arrow or a down arrow classifying each as a quantum ms = +1/2 or -1/2.
What are valence electrons?
Electrons used in bonding.
