Mod 3 Lesson 2 Flashcards
Compound
consists of two or more different atoms combined in a small, whole-number ratio that are chemically joined and cannot be separated easily
Elements
unique forms of matter with specific chemical and physical properties that cannot be broken down into smaller substances by ordinary chemical reactions
Heterogeneous mixture
a non-uniform mixture that can be separated into its components
Homogeneous mixture
a uniform mixture where the components of the mixture are evenly distributed throughout the sample
Law of constant composition
a law stating that pure substances always have the same composition which will not change from sample to sample
Matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
Mixture
composed of two or more individual types of matter that can be separated by physical methods
Pure substance
a sample that consists of one type of matter and always has the same composition and properties
