Mod 3 Lesson 1 Flashcards
Matter
anything that occupies space and has mass
Elements
unique forms of matter with specific chemical and physical properties that cannot be broken down into smaller substances by ordinary chemical reactions
Atom
the smallest unit of an element that retains all of the chemical properties of an element
Volume
the amount of space a liquid or object takes up in cubic units (e.g. cubic inches, cubic feet, cubic meters, etc.)
Mass
a measurement of how much matter is in an object; not dependent on gravity; the basic metric unit of mass is the gram
Molecules
an electrically neutral group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
Property
characteristics that enable us to distinguish one substance from another
Gas
a state of matter that has a great deal of space between particles and takes both the shape and volume of its container if confined
Solid
state of matter that is rigid and possesses a definite shape and volume
Liquid
a state of matter that has a definite volume but takes the shape of a container
