Mod 6 Lesson 3 Flashcards
What is an atomic emission spectrum?
A line spectrum observed through gaseous elements in a glass tube being sent energy in the form of electricity; emitted light can be passed through a prism, and the resulting line spectrum can be observed.
What is a continuous spectrum?
A polychromatic source showing wavelengths of all colors with no or very few blank spots in between.
What is an energy level diagram?
A visual of an atom’s energy levels where electrons can exist.
What is an excited state?
When an electron residing in its ground state absorbs energy and moves to a higher energy orbital.
What is a flame test?
A generic lab for observing light being emitted from excited electrons within an atom.
What is a ground state?
The lowest energy state for an electron.
What is a line spectrum?
A noncontinuous spectrum of visible light wavelengths released by an excited atom.
What are principal quantum numbers (n)?
Whole numbers that correspond to the energies where electrons are allowed to reside within the atom.
What is the Rydberg equation?
An equation that allows scientists to calculate the wavelengths of the spectral lines of hydrogen.
What is a spectrum?
Radiation emitted from polychromatic sources is separated out into individual wavelengths.
