Mod 1 Lesson 9 Flashcards
confounding variable
a condition that is not held constant across experimental and control groups that could affect the results
control group
serves as a basis for comparison and controls for chance factors that might influence the results of the study — by holding such factors constant across groups so that the experimental manipulation is the only difference between groups
data analysis
the process of transforming, analyzing, and modeling data to create useful statistics, easier to understand and apply numbers, and hypothesis supporting data and conclusions
dependent variable
the variable that the researcher measures to see how much effect the independent variable had
experiment
a procedure carried out under controlled conditions in order to discover an unknown effect, and to test or establish a hypothesis
experimental group
a group designed to answer a research question
hypothesis
a suggested explanation for an observation, which can be tested
independent variable
a variable that is influenced or controlled by the experimenter
raw data
data that has not been processed or adjusted after statistical use
