Mod 5 Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is a chemical formula?
A visual representation of an element or compound that shows element(s) present and the number of atoms of each element.
What is a compound?
Two or more elements chemically combined.
What is a covalent bond?
Two or more atoms chemically bonded by sharing their electrons to gain stability.
What are diatomic molecules?
Seven elements that in nature are found in pairs: nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, and hydrogen.
What is an empirical formula?
A formula written in the smallest whole-number atom ratio of the elements.
What is a molecule?
Two or more nonmetals formed through covalent bonds.
What is a molecular formula?
A formula that shows the actual number of atoms for each element.
What are valence electrons?
Electrons in the outermost energy level involved in chemical bonding.
