Mod 6 Lesson 5 Flashcards
What is the Aufbau principle?
A principle stating that electrons must fill orbitals of the lowest energy before occupying orbitals of higher energy.
What does degenerate refer to in atomic orbitals?
Orbitals with the same energies within a many-electron atom.
What is electron-electron repulsion?
Electrons near each other in a many-electron atom that create repulsion.
What is electron spin?
The intrinsic property of electrons that allows them to spin to create a magnetic field; they can have either a clockwise spin or a counterclockwise spin.
What are energy levels?
Locations outside of the nucleus with very specific energies where electrons are located.
What is an energy level diagram?
A diagram showing relative energies of shells, subshells, and orbitals of a hydrogen or many-electron atom.
What is a many-electron atom?
An atom with two or more electrons.
What is the Pauli exclusion principle?
A principle stating that no two electrons in an atom can have the same set of four quantum numbers.
What are subshells?
Shells consisting of different energies and shapes located within energy levels.
