What is mitral stenosis?
when the mitral valve narrows and does not open properly
what causes mitral stenosis?
rheumatic fever, congenital
What are the symptoms of mitral stenosis
usually asymptomatic, in severe cases progressive dyspnoea and right heart failure
what are the signs of mitral stenosis?
mid late diastolic murmur best heard on expiration, loud S1 opening sound, love volume pulse, malar flush and atrial.fibrillation
what investigation are taken place for mitral stenosis?
CXR and echo
whar does CXR show when mitral stenosis is present?
left atrial enlargement
how does an echo show when mitral stenosis is present?
TTE is able to identify left atrial size, thickening, etc and determine diagnosis
what is the treatment for mitral stenosis?
trans-septal balloon valvotomy, closed valvotomy, open valvotomy or mitral valve replacement
what cusps does the mitral valve contain?
anterior and posterior cusps
