mitral regurgitation Flashcards
what is mitral regurgitation
when the mitral valve does not shut properly leading to the backflow of blood through the mitral valve during systole
what causes mitral regurgitation
occurs following an MI, coronary disease, endocarditis, rheumatic fever or may be congenital
what are the symptoms of mitral regurgitation
most are asymptomatic, symtpoms are usually due to failure of left ventricle
what are the signs of mitral regurgitation
pansystolic murmur described as ‘blowing’, heard best at apex, radiating to axilla, may be quiet as a result of incomplete closure of the valve. Severe MR may cause a widely split S2.
what are investigations taken place for mitral regurgitation
ECG, CXR, echo
what will the ECG look like if someone has mitral regurgitation
may have a broad P wave due to atrial enlargement
what may the CXR look like if someone has mitral regurgitation
cardiomegaly
what is the treatment for mitral regurgitation
surgery
