Milgram Flashcards
On average what percentage did psychology students estimate that ps would obey orders in Milgram’s study.
1.2%
What was the aim of Milgram’s study?
To investigate how obedient people would be to orders from a person in authority that would result in pain and harm to another person.
In context: To see how large electric shocks participants would give to a helpless man.
What was the DV for Milgram’s study?
obedience.
How was the sample gained in Milgram’s study?
Recruited by means of a newspaper advertisement.
Describe Milgram’s sample.
fourty men aged 20-50. Volunteer or self-selected. they were from a range f backgrounds and held a range of jobs. All from the New Haven district of North America
What was the fake aim of Milgram’s study?
The effect of punishment on learning
Briefly explain the procedure of Milgram’s study
The ps drew a slip of paper allocating roles. This was rigged. The learner was strapped into a chair and an electrode was attached. There was a row of switches each labelled with a voltages. This was administered to the learner if they answered incorrectly.
How did the voltages go up and what volt was demonstrated on the ps?
Started at 15 v and went up in 15v increments to 450v.
45v was tested on them.
How was obedience measured in milgram’s study?
If a p administered 450v 3 times.
What happened at 300v in Milgram’s sudy?
The learner pounded on the wall at 300 and 315v and then he was silent. The experieter told hem to continue
What happened at the end of Milgram’s study?
Interviewed and de-hoaxed. during the interview they were asked to rate on a scale of 0-14how painful the last few shocks they gave were. They were told that the shocks were not real, that the learner was unharmed, and that the real purpose of the study was to investigate obedience.
What was the average amount of shocks given?
What percentage of p gave 300v or more?
What percentage of ps gave 450v 3 times?
368v
100%
65%
During the post interview what was the average rating for how painful the shocks were to administer?
13.42/14
What were the 2 main conclusions drawn from Milgram’s study?
-People are much more obedant to destructive orders than we might expect.
-People find the experience of obeying and recieving destructive orders highly stressful. They obey in spite of their emotional responses.
What are 3 possible explanations for the high levels of obedience in Milgram’s study?
-The teacher and learner have appeared to have volunteered so have an obligation to the experimenter
-The study was carried out in a respectable environment of a top university
-The ps were assured that the shocks were no dangerous.
Were getting paid.
