Proof can be found in the Quran, Hadith, and actions of pious predecessors. In surah Yunus, Alaah tells us to rejoice over his blessings. In surah Duha he tells us to publicize his bounty.

Despite Abu Lahab being cruel to the Holy Prophet during his life, he freed a slave girl when he heard of the prophets birth due to happiness. Because of this he receives water in hell.
Is there proof of celebrating milaad during the life of the Holy Prophet?
It is narrated that the Holy prophet fasted on Monday because it was the day that he was born and the day that he received revelation. Milaad is not a recent innovation, people have been celebrating it for years.
What is the date of the birth of the Holy Prophet?
There is a difference of opinion but the well known date is 12th of rabi ul awal.
How is it to do a juloos for milaad?
It is an act of reverence and respect.
