How is it to kiss the thumbs and place them on the eyes upon hearing the name Muhammad?
It is a preferred, recommended, and reward able act and a sign of love.
What is the proof of kissing the thumbs when hearing the name of Prophet Muhammad?
It is mentioned in kanzul ibaad that the one who kisses both of his thumbs after hearing the azan will be admitted to paradise.
Explain an incident regarding kissing the thumbs.
Imam Ala Hazrat Ahmad Raza Khan says in reference to Musnadul Firdaus that Hazrat Abu Siqeeq narrates that when hearing the name of Rasool in the azan, he kissed his thumbs and placed them on his eyes. Upon this, the Holy Prophet said “the one who does as my beloved has, my intercession will be lawful for him”.
If there was no evidence would this act still be permissible?
Yes. There is nothing in sharia prohibiting this therefore it is permissible.
