Midgut Flashcards
What is the biliary system?
Organs and ducts which create, store and release bile into descending portion of duodenum
Give an account of the ducts in the biliary system
- Left and right hepatic ducts form common hepatic duct
- Common hepatic duct and cystic duct form common bile duct
- Common bile duct joins pancreatic duct to enter duodenum through ampulla of Vater
Where does bile originate?
Hepatocytes
Where is bile stored?
Gallbladder
What is the function of bile salts?
Emulsify fats and facilitate intestinal absorption
What is the function of the sphincters in the common bile duct and main pancreatic duct?
Ensure bile only flows in 1 direction
Where does the superior mesenteric artery supply?
Small intestine and first 2/3 of large intestine
What are 5 main arteries given by the superior mesenteric artery?
- Middle colic
- Right colic
- Ileocolic
- Jejunal
- Ileal
What supplies blood to duodenum?
Superior and inferior pancreaticoduodenal arteries
What supplies blood to jejunum?
Jejunal arteries
What supplies blood to ileum?
Ileal arteries
What supplies blood to caecum?
Ileocolic artery
What supplies blood to appendix?
Appendicular artery from ileocolic artery
What supplies blood to sigmoid colon?
Sigmoid arteries
What supplies blood to rectum?
Superior rectal artery
What supplies blood to ascending/transverse/descending colon?
Right/Middle/Left colic arteries respectively
What are 4 ways to differentiate between large intestine and small intestine?
- Teniae coli
- Haustra
- Epiploic appendices
- Larger diameter
What are 4 ways to differentiate between ileum and jejunum?
- More complex arterial arcades
- Shorter vasa recta
- Less plicae circulares
- Fat present in mesentery is massive
What connects ileum and caecum?
Ileocecal valve inside ileocecal orifice
Where is the base of the appendix situated?
Between ileocecal valve and apex of caecum
What are 5 positions the tip of the appendix can be in?
- Ascending behind caecum
- Inferior to caecum
- Transverse behind caecum
- Anterior to ileum
- Posterior to ileum
What is the teniae coli?
Longitudinal smooth muscle on large intestine
What are haustra?
Sacculations found on large intestine
What are epiploic appendices?
Small bags of fat filled peritoneum found on large intestine
