Joints Flashcards
What is the definition of a joint?
The articulation or union of two or more bones
What are the three types of joint?
- Fibrous
- Cartilaginous
- Synovial
What are three types of fibrous joint?
- Sutures
- Syndesmosis
- Gomphosis
What are sutures?
Allow skull to get smaller at birth
What is syndesmosis?
A partially moveable joint where two adjacent bones are attached by an interosseous membrane
What is gomphosis?
The joint which joins a root of a tooth to maxillary or mandibular alveolar process
Give two examples of syndesmosis
Radius and Ulna
Tibia and Fibula
What are the two types of cartilaginous joint?
Primary/Synchondroses
Secondary/Symphysis
What is a fibrous joint?
A joint which is composed of fibrous connective tissue
What is synchondroses?
Synchondroses is a plate of hyaline cartilage which joins two endochondral bones and fuses after adolescence
What is symphysis?
Symphysis is a partially moveable joint where two opposing bones are lined with hyaline cartilage and separated by fibrocartilage
Give an example of synchondroses
Epiphyseal growth plate
Give 2 examples of symphysis
- Pubis Symphysis
2. Intervertebral Discs
Name 2 differences between synchondroses and symphysis?
- Synchondroses has only hyaline cartilage while symphysis has fibrocartilage too
- Symphysis is partially moveable
Give 4 features of a synovial joint
- Freely moveable
- Articular cartilage coats bone surfaces
- Joint cavity containing synovial fluid
- Cavity lined by synovial membrane
Name the 3 types of synovial joint
- Uniaxial
- Biaxial
- Multiaxial
