Methods of Fabric Formation Flashcards
- Method of fabric formation
- Matting together of fibers to form a web by moisture, pressure and heat (induces shrinkage & increases density).
- Results in a continuous dense cloth that is firm, slightly fuzzy and low in tensile strength
- No grain or direction
- Can be cut, sewn and draped in anyway without requiring hemming
Felting
- Method of fabric formation
- Originally in sheet forms through extrusion through a wide, die, forming in molds or rolling between rollers
- Sheet is a finished product in highly varied forms that is thick and opaque, leather-like, suede-like, softness, embossed, etc.
Films
- Method of fabric formation
- Machinery wherein blunt rods or needles are used to form a single continuous yarn into a series of interlocking loops
- Sometimes faster than weaving
- Produces dimensionally stable knit fabrics
- Similar to crochet
Knitting
Vertical rows of knit stitches
Wales
Horizontal rows of knit stitches
Courses
- Knit stitch
- produces a smooth-face material; used in making fine, thin or sheer fabrics
Plain stitches
- Knit stitch
- produces lines of wales on both sides of the fabrics causing the fabric to be very elastic
Rib Stitches
- Knit stitch
- formed by holding one loop on a needle while taking on one or more additional loops then casting all if them onto another needs
Tuck Stitches
- Knit stitch
- have successive courses of stitches drawn to opposite sides of the fabric, making it very elastic in the lengthwise direction and quite elastic in the crosswise direction
Purl Stitches
- Knit fabric construction
- made on a circular machine and produces a tubular fabric w/o seams
Circular Knit
- Knit fabric construction
- made with two sets of needles to give a ribbed or corrugated surface to the fabric
Ribbed Fabric
- Knit fabric construction
- fabric is made by having the needles arranged in a straight line
Flat Outerwear
- Knit fabric construction
- fabric is made on a machine with only one set of needles
Flat Underwear
- Knitted fabric
- knitted with a double stitch on a double needle frame to provide a double thickness that is the same on both sides. This has excellent body and stability
Double Knit
- Knitted fabric
- special type of eight-lock knit cloth that has a smooth surface on both sides
Interlock Knit
- Knitted fabric
- plain stitch knitted fabric
Jersey
- Knitted fabric
- produced by silver knitting, knitting both yarn and fiber into fabric to provide an exceptionally deep pile effect
Knit Pile
- Knitted fabric
- known for its high gauge, lightweight, fine texture and appeal in hand. Warps always move in the opposite direction with full threading or color arrangement to produce a run-proof fabric
Milanese Knitted
- Knitted fabric
- one kind of yarn on the face while another type is found on the back of the goods
Plated
- Knitted fabric
- versatile fabric that can be made from every type of yarn of any type of fiber in any form
Rachel Knit
- Knitted fabric
- fabric knitted on a single-needle machine, less body, substance and stability than double knit
Single Knit
- Knitted fabric
- warp-knitted fabric that has a thin tecture since it is made from yarn. From french word ‘tricoter’ – to knit
Tricot
- Knitted fabric
- popular knit fabric with properties that are similar to woven velour
Velour
- Method of fabric formation
- Interweaving or interwining
of three or more stands of yarn or other materials - Passes over and under one another
- Produces flat, narrow tapes or strips as well as center-cored rounds or hollow tubes
- Suitable for shaped articles
Brading
- Type of straw
- fine, lightweight, expensive straw with a dull-finish
Baku
- Type of straw
- fine, lightweight, glossy straw obtained from unopened palm leaf stems
Balibuntai
- Type of straw
- fine, braided straw, made from special wheat grown in Tuscany that has been cut, bleached and worked by hand
Leghorn
- Type of straw
- fine, closely braded straw
Milan
- Type of straw
- fine, hand-braided, creamy colored Toquilla straw made primarily in Ecuador
Panama
- Type of straw
- fine, yellow straw woven from the tops of bleached wheat stalks frown in Tuscany
Tuscan
- Method of fabric formation
- Intertwining and sometimes knotting of yarns that run in two or more directions
- Used to make nets, macrame (knotted) and laces
- Macrame – wall hangings
Twisting`
- Method of fabric formation
- Interlacing of warp or float and filling or weft
- Three general heading: Plain, Twill and Satin, all others are variation or combinations
Weaving
