Medical Terms 9 Flashcards
Foley Catheter:
a thin, sterile tube inserted into the bladder to drain urine. It is held in place with a balloon at the end, which is filled with sterile water to prevent the catheter from being removed from the bladder. The urine drains through the catheter tube into a bag and can then be taken from an outlet device to be drained.
Endocrinologist:
Endocrinologists are specially trained physicians who diagnose diseases related to the glands.
Pneumothorax:
a collapsed lung. Pneumothorax occurs when air leaks into the space between your lungs and chest wall. This air pushes on the outside of your lung and makes it collapse. In most cases, only a portion of the lung collapses.
Sepsis:
Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection. Sepsis occurs when chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection trigger inflammatory responses throughout the body.
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus:
bacteria that is resistant to many antibiotics
Thrombocytopenia:
low blood platelet count that often occurs as a result of a separate disorder, such as leukemia or an immune system problem, or as a medication side effect.
Thrombosis:
formation or presence of a blood clot in a blood vessel.
Vasoconstriction:
narrowing (constriction) of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls.
Vasodilation:
Widening of blood vessels that results from relaxation of the muscular walls of the vessels.
Vasospasm:
condition in which a blood vessel’s spasm leads to vasoconstriction, which can lead to tissue ischemia and tissue death (necrosis).
