Medical Terms 2 Flashcards
Arthroplasty:
surgical procedure to restore the integrity/function of a joint - can be restored by resurfacing the bones.
Airborne Precautions:
required to protect against airborne transmission of infectious agents. Diseases requiring airborne precautions include, but are not limited to: measles, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), Varicella (chickenpox), and mycobacterium TB - requires personal respiratory protection and special ventilation and air handling.
Angina:
chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart muscle and is a symptom of coronary artery disease. It is typically described as squeezing, pressure, heaviness, tightness or pain in your chest.
Atherosclerosis:
disease in which plaque (plak) builds up inside your arteries.
Carotid Endarterectomy:
operation during which your vascular surgeon removes the inner lining of your carotid artery if it has become thickened or damaged - eliminates plaque from your artery and can restore blood flow.
Contact Precautions:
used along with standard precautions in an additional effort to prevent the spread of infection. Gloves and a gown are worn for all activities that may involve contact with the patient or potentially contaminated areas. Used whenever you are caring for a patient with an infection that can be transmitted by contact with the person’s skin, mucus membranes, feces, vomit, urine, wound drainage, or other body fluids, or by contact with equipment or environmental surfaces that may be contaminated by the patient or by his/her secretions and excretions.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT):
occurs when a blood clot (thrombus) forms in one or more of the deep veins in your body, usually in your legs. Deep vein thrombosis can cause leg pain or swelling, but may occur without any symptoms.
Droplet Precautions:
Droplet precautions require wearing a face mask (also called a surgical mask) when in a room with a person who has a respiratory infection. These precautions are used in addition to standard precautions
Echocardiogram:
An echocardiogram uses sound waves to produce images of your heart. This commonly used test allows your doctor to see how your heart is beating and pumping blood
Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram (EKG or ECG) is a simple, painless test that records the heart’s electrical activity. It shows how fast your heart is beating, whether the rhythm of your heartbeat is steady or irregular and also the strength and timing of electrical signals as they pass through each part of the heart.
