Medical Terms 1 Flashcards
Atrial Fibrillation:
most common irregular heart rhythm that starts in the atria
CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft):
surgery to improve blood flow to the heart by connecting a healthy vein to bypass the blocked portion of the coronary artery. Use on pt. with severe coronary heart disease.
Cardiac Catherization:
used to diagnose and treat some heart conditions by putting a long, thin, flexible tube (catheter) into a blood vessel in a person’s arm, groin (upper thigh), or neck and threading it to his/her heart - MD can do diagnostic tests and treatments on the heart.
Diaphoresis:
perspiration especially profuse perspiration that is artificially induced
Ejection Fraction:
measurement of how much blood the left ventricle pumps out with each contraction
Extubation:
removal of a tube from a hollow organ or passageway, often from the airway (larynx)
HTN (Hypertension):
high blood pressure that causes significant cardiovascular and organ damage.
Hyperlipidemia:
high lipid levels - high cholesterol and high triglyceride levels
Nitroglycerin:
nitrate that is used to treat episodes of angina (chest pain) in people who have coronary artery disease
Sinus Rhythm:
normal regular rhythm of the heart set by the natural pacemaker called the sinoatrial (or sinus) code. It is located in right atrium (right upper chamber of the heart).
