mechanism Flashcards
what are mechanism
mechanisms break reactions down into a sequence of stages. Reaction mechanism diagrams show how molecules react together by using curly arrows to show which bonds are made or broken
curly arrows
in order to break or make a bond in a reaction electronds have to be move around. A curly arrow shows where a pair of electrons goes during a reaction
arrows
the arrow starts at the bond or lone pair where the electrons are at the beginning of the step.
the arrow points where the new bond is formed at the end of the step.
isomers
have the same atoms but are arranged differently
structural isomers
they have the same moleculor formula however have a different structural formation.
chain isomers
position isomers
functional group isomers
chain isomers
same functional group but a different arrangment with the carbon skeleton.
e.g.
butane vs methylpropane
position isomers
they have the same skeleton and the same atoms or groups attached
the difference is that the groups are attached to different carbon atoms.
functional group isomers
same atoms arranged into different functional groups
