Malott 22 Flashcards
rule
states occasion, response, consequence- description of the contingency
reinforcement by the presentation of reinforcers
if a reinforcer follows a behavior within 60 seconds, that behavior increases in the future
rule control
statement of a rule controls the response described in that rule
rule-governed behavior
behavior under the control of a rule
contingency control
direct control of behavior by a contingency without the involvement of rules
direct-acting contingencies
the outcome of the response reinforces or punishes that response; the reinforcement comes within 60 seconds
indirect-acting contingencies
a contingency that controls the behavior, though the behavior’s outcome doesn’t reinforce/punish that response (rule-governed behavior)
ineffective contingency
a contingency that does not control behavior
rule-governed analog to a behavioral contingency
a change in the frequency of a behavior because of a rule describing the contingency (basically, a behavioral contingency governed by a rule instead of being direct)
deadline
adding deadlines makes it into an avoidance contingency. time before the deadline is an SD (discriminated avoidance contingency) or a nondiscriminated avoidance contingency
analog
when 2 procedures are alike in some ways and not in other ways
conditional aversive stimulus
something is only aversive in certain situations (it’s only aversive to be away from home when mom is calling, because he knows the rule that the call means he should be home)
why do we procrastinate
approaching the deadline is aversive if we haven’t worked, but working gets rid of the aversiveness (which wasn’t so bad until the deadline became close)
