Adult Dose

A

Eclampsia: 5 g bolus IV over 15 min (in 250 ml NS), followed by a 2 g/hr infusion.
Hypomagnesium: 2 g bolus IV over 15 min (in 250 ml NS).
Tosades de pointes: With out a pulse: 2 g over 5 min.
With a pulse: Load with 2 g in 250 ml of NS over 15 min, then infuse at 1 g/hr.

A

Smaller dose may be needed in patients with renal insufficiency. Dilute large amounts whenever possible in NS.

CNS: CNS depression, muscular hyporeflexia
CV: Heart block, hypotension, vasodilation
Resp: Respiratory tract paralysis
