Action
Works in brain to inhibit painful sensations
Onset and Duration
Onset = within 30 seconds Duration = 5-10 minutes
Indications
Induction agent for RSI (when used with Rocuronium).
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity, allergy
Side effects
Hypertension, Increased HR, Hallucination, Respiratory depression.
Adult dose
IM: 4 mg/kg (max dose of 400 mg)
IV loading dose: 2 mg/kg
IV maintenance infusion: 0.05 mg/kg/hr
Special Considerations
Pregnance class C (no studies in women. drug should only be given if benefit justifies risk to fetus). Ketamine may increase BP, HR, and muscle tone. Ketamine should not be given to patients with kidney or renal failure. Keep patients in a quit environment if possible.
