Drug Class
Loop diuretic
Action
It prevents the re-absorption of sodium and chloride in the kidneys thus causing increased urine output and decreasing cardiac pre-load.
Onset and Duration
Onset = (IV) diuretic effects within 15-20 minutes; vascular effects within 5 minutes. Duration = 2 hours
Indications
Pulmonary edema associated with CHF.
Contraindications
Hypovolemia, Dehydration, Hypokalemia
Side effects
Hypotension, Hypokalemia (delayed)
Adult dose
20-40 mg slow IV over 1-2 minutes.
Pediatric dose
1 mg/kg slow IV push. Max total dose 20 mg.
Special considerations
Pregnancy class C. Has been known to cause fetal abnormalties. Protect from light and store at room temp. Do not use if the solution is discolored or yellow.

Max Adult Dose
Single doses exceeding 200 mg are rarely necessary.
