Etomidate Flashcards
Class
Non barbiturate hypnotic, anesthetic.
Description
Short acting drug that may be given for conscious sedation to relive apprehension or impair memory before ET intubation or cardioversion.
Onset and Duration
Onset = within 30 seconds Duration = 3-5 minutes
Indications
Pre-medication for ET intubation or cardioversion.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Etomidate
Labor/delivery
Adverse reactions
Nausea and Vommiting, Dysrhythmias, Dyspnea, Hypotension, Hypertension, Involuntary muscle movement, Pain at injection site.
Drug Interations
Effects may be enhanced when given with other CNS depressants.
Adult Dose
0.2-0.6mg/kg IV over 30-60 seconds
Pediatric dose
(over 10 years old) 0.2-0.4mg/kg for RSI.
Special Considerations
Pregnancy class C (no studies in women. drug should only be given if benefit justifies risk to fetus), Carefully monitor vitals, Etomidate can suppress adrenal gland production of steroid hormones, which can cause temporary gland failure.
